**What are the best Claude Code skills?**

Start with what you do most. For coding: obra/superpowers' test-driven-development and verification-before-completion, plus a code review skill. For files: Anthropic's pdf, docx, xlsx and pptx skills. For prose and UI: a humanizer and a design taste skill. Every pick on this page scored 85 or more on our scanner with no critical finding.

**Do these skills work in Cursor, Codex and Gemini CLI?**

Yes, if the skill is a plain SKILL.md folder. Claude Code reads .claude/skills; Cursor, Codex and Gemini CLI read .agents/skills. Skills that call tools only one agent has, such as a Claude-only plugin hook, may need changes.

**How many skills should I install?**

Few. Each installed skill keeps its name and description in context all the time, about 50 to 100 tokens, and loads its body when it triggers. Five to fifteen well-chosen skills beat a hundred overlapping ones that trigger on the wrong task.

**Are free skills good enough?**

Often, yes. Most picks on this page are free. 1,052 of the 1,638 public skills we scanned clear our bar. Paid skills make sense when one saves you real time on a narrow job and you want it reviewed, maintained and personalised.

**How do I know a skill is safe to install?**

Read its SKILL.md and any scripts before installing, and scan it. Look for instructions to fetch and run remote code, hidden text, or requests for credentials. Our scanner flags these patterns, but no scanner catches everything, so a read by a person still matters.
